Trailer&Film Poster Analysis

           Poster:

This is the official Film Poster for the film The Wolf Of Wall Street. The key conventions we can see in this Film Poster are, the central image, the film title, stars/directors name, critic reviews at the top, a production blurb and at the bottom under the production blurb you can see what the films Facebook site is called. All of these attract an audience because people that are fans of Leonardo DiCaprio would be interested to watch this film, especially because the Hollywood actor has a background of taking part in romance, drama, thriller and comedy movies, in this case the genre of this movie is Comedy and we can tell this by the background of naked women, a little monkey in a suit in the bottom right corner and the fact that there's a part taking place behind our main character.

This is the official Film Trailer for the film The Wolf Of Wall Street. The key conventions we can see in this Film Trailer are, the institutional details, short clips of key moments in the film to introduce characters and narrative, fast paced editing to suggest drama and excitement, on screen text for the main information, the title and music that communicates genre and 'feel' of film. This Trailer may attract an audience who likes the actor Leonardo Dicaprio or other actors such as Jonah Hill and Margot Robbie. Also this attracts an audience who prefer comedy genres with abit of crime. The genres are quite easy to spot in this trailer as every short clip consists of one of the genres.

In my opinion I believe that by the film poster and trailer this film has successfully been promoted, I also believe that both film trailer and poster show the target audience of this film and show the different bits of different types of scenes which will vary in the movie therefore people who do not enjoy these types of films should know not to watch them and I believe that this is where the promotion went abit downhill because some of the viewers who watched this are not attracted to these types of movies, which contain a variety of different and somehow what the people may find inappropriate.

The Wolf Of Wall Steet

My Chosen Movie

The film I have chosen to analyse is The Wolf Of Wall Street.
The reason why I chose this film to analyse is because the moral of this story is very interesting and has an interesting story on why the story ends the way it does. I also chose this because there is alot of  information to analyse about this film and why it has varied the representation of the characters in a certain way.

Institutional Background

The film had 5 production companies however the first one was Paramount Pictures which presented the movie along with Red Granite Pictures. The UK Distributors where Universal Pictures International and Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.

No Brand Loyalty

The Wolf Of Wall Street has three different genres; Crime, Drama and Biography. The trailer of the film specifies all the genres of the movie and this is because in the movie you see bits of drama, you see the biography genre where the main character 'Jordan Belfort' who in the trailer engages the audience by asking a rhetorical question and the last genre crime is because the rhetorical question is the main character asking "Was all this legal?" and then answering it himself with "Absolutely not," this tells us that crime was a well chosen genre as the FBI have a big part in the movie. My chosen movie is not a sequel the first movie first came out in USA in 2013 and i believe it will remain as one movie. No other movies by the writer are mentioned in the trailer however the writer has written other movies before such as; Boardwalk Empire, The Sopranos and Get Rich Or Die Tryin' .

Its All A Matter Of Timing

The release date for the movie in the UK was 17 January 2014. The official trailer came out on 29 October 2013 on Youtube however I tried looking for teaser trailers but I could not find any.

Its A Social Thing

Th majority of the public have given this movie a good review, some have described it as Scorsese's best work however there are other people who see it in a different view, they believe its full of drugs, sex scenes violence and greed they also believe no emotion is displayed throughout the movie at all. Some of the critic reviews were actually interesting to read, in this case I have planned to show two good reviews and one bad review that the movie got.

Good;
"This is a fantastic exploration of greed. money, and truly flawed character that spent much on the nineties on a jaw-dropping but pernicious thrill-ride"
Bad;
"Every time I looked at my watch, the hands seemed to have stayed still."

Good; "The Wolf of Wall Street is a film that speaks to our times, and it is saying some very important things if we care to listen."

Risky Business

The production budget in dollars for this movie was $100 million. In dollars the movie made around $18,361,578 in the opening weekend whereas in pounds the movie made around £11,635,731.98 on the opening weekend worldwide. Worldwide the film made around $116,900,694 + £275.100,00 from foreign countries.

Stars In Their Eyes

The director has previously directed films such as; Goodfellas, Shutter Island and The Departed. His previous films vary from, Biography, Drama, Crime, Thriller and Mystery. The main start in this film is Leonardo DiCaprio who is famously known to play many different roles in different genre movies. DiCaprio has also taken part in The Departed which is another movie by Martin Scorsese. DiCaprio is known to play many different roles therefore he is not known for a specific type of genre. The director is mentioned at the beginning of the trailer whereas the writer of the script and the writet of the book the film is based on are both mentioned in one shot at the end.

3 Trailer Analysis

The name of this film is called Beyond The Lights. The genre of this movie is Drama. The storyline of this movie is a famous superstar who is forced to hide herself away, she hates being famous because she can't be who she is. She also find love in the story and romance in this case fits the Drama genre well. The characters portray the genre very well, the young lady in this film shows that she needs a man to save her from being who she is and understand her for who she is and not who she has to be. There is plenty of iconography typical of the Drama genre for example during the film you see her trying to commit suicide, there is abit of romance involved, theres alot of drama as to how she hates her life and abit of violence. I believe that this movie portrays the genre quite well. The trailer isn't very long however the setting of this film is very glamorous and contains scenes of setting in America.

The name of this film is Blood Shed. The genre of this film is Horror. The storyline behind this movie is about a guy who visits a homeless shelter to find out about his history, however he soon discovers that the shelter is haunted by the ghost of a deranged female. He soon wants to leave but once the security guard has closed the doors there's no escape until daylight. The story behind this and the events in the movie portray why the genre is Horror. There is plenty of iconography of typical horror as the scenes in the movie consist of blood, gore, brutality and alot of death. The trailer isn't very long however, the movie is set in a homeless shelter in America.

The name of this film is Unbroken. The film consists of three different genres: Sport, Drama and Action. The storyline behind this movie(not yet released) is about a young boy who starts his life on the wrong foot, he has a habit of getting into trouble however he soon decides to do something with his life and becomes a running champion in the Olympics. Soon after his accomplishments he gets captured by the Japanese forces and is transferred from one camp to another beaten over and over because he wont follow the rules. The character in the movie is determined to gain freedom and return home and he remains resilient throughout the whole movie. All of these even in the movie portray the genres. There is plenty of iconography linking to the three different genres. For sport you have the olympics and running. For drama you have the brutal events of his life and what hes been through. For action you have all the times hes survived and got back up on his feet. The setting of this movie is in the World War Two.

Three Analysed Shots

This is a medium shot. Medium shots let us see a little bit of the background but not to much for us to see where they are. Medium shots also lets us see emotion on the characters faces. I think the director used a medium shot for this moment to let us see the emotion on the characters faces and how many people there are. Also the medium shot in this case creates s scene where it looks like these guys are after someone, which basically means our medium shot tells us quite a bit about what we need to know or see. In this shot we can see 5 officers clearly however overall in the view 6 are shown. The fact that not every police is shown in this shot makes us wonder where the rest are as surely seeing this many police officers would suggest there are more about.

This is a long shot. A long shot lets us see enough to know where the setting is and is this moment the setting is at the corner of a street and an old car is parked there, if you look closely you can see a guy there in the bottom right corner and it looks like he is running. Straight away you will assume that there is a danger that he is running away from and you will ask yourself why he has decided to turn into this corner of the street. The long shot is mostly used however to introduce a new setting and of course in this case it is the corner he has turned into. Longshots are also well used to spot detail in a shot that you may of not have noticed before.

This shot is a close up shot. A close up show lets us the emotion of the characters face. I think the director used a close up shot to let us see the emotion on the man's face. He looks like he is upset and worried so we may have sympathy for him, the fact that his eyes are directed on the left side of the screen clearly states he is looking at someone/some people which could possibly suggest theres a bigger reason to why he is upset. Half of the mans face in this shot is firmly blacked out showing there are two sides to him. This is a main reason why close ups are used they help us understand our character, to understand their flaws and how they are personality wise

10 pics

This a wide shot and a wide shot is usually used to present the scene or introduce a new one, our wide shot is off the school to show that our story is school related. The angle of this picture is straight as its not taken at angle. This picture shows the audience that this is the start of the storyboard.

This is a long shot, and it is usually from head to toe it is usually used to introduce the character or show us what he/she may look like, the picture shows the boy walking down the hill looking for someone. This picture shows the audience that this is one of our main characters and his face looking towards the right shows that he may be looking for someone else.

No this is a high angle and this angle is always used to make our character look vulnerable and make it easy to see that he is the victim, the picture shows the boy looking up, with a kind of scared face impression. The audience can now tell from this shot that this is our victim.

This is a low angle and this is used to make the character look strong and manipulative, in this picture the boy is lucking down as if to show that he is now going to make a decision he will regret later on, and something will happen including the victim. The audience can tell that this is the predator and is hunting down his victim.
This is a medium closer and this is mostly used to show us the features and get know our character just a little bitter, and not just by personality. Here the character looks quite relaxed and without trouble. The audience can now clearly look at out victim and get to know him a little bit better than before.

This is supposed to be a close up, thi is also used to get to know our character, the character looks upset and angry, he looks like he is within deep thoughts. The audience knows that the character has mixed feelings about what is about to take place.

This is an over the shoulder shot and this is mostly used within dialogue of two people, here our two characters are exchanging dialogue and are talking it also a good thing that we can also see the background which is a part of the school because it carries on telling us that we are still in school. The audience knows that something is going on now that the two characters are talking.

We called this a medium shot because its mostly head to waist, in this picture our "predator" is headlocking its "pray." The audience can see and tell that a fight is taking place, this is shown by the fact that one of the boys is in a headlock.

This is an extreme close up, this shot is used to define a characters features, in this case we have defines a womans eyes however this is not just a woman it is a teacher that will now tell them off. The audience knows that the two students have been caught fighting.

I chose this as my finish picture of my story board, and this is an unusual perspective angle because it shows the field of where the boys where fighting the reason why i chose this is because i believe that its a good way to close the scene, this is taken at a slightly tilted side angle. The audience now knows that this is the end of the story board because of how the story has ended already from the picture before where they got caught.

First fruit bowl; my key word for this fruit bowl was Winter and the little picture on the right hand corner shows the image that I took my colours from for my fruit bowl. I chose the word Winter because I like the cold colours and the light colours.

Second fruit bowl; my key word for this fruit bowl was Vibrant and the the rose which I took the colours from my fruit off, the I entered the flower into the background to show that I  can use the skill of copying and pasting a picture into another. I chose the word Vibrant because it has light and neon type of colours.

Third fruit bowl; My key word for this fruit bowl is Fashionable. I got all my colours from the picture on the top right corner. I chose the word Fashionable because it was the only other interesting word andit has some expensive rich colours.

My Advert

lANGUAGE :
The first thing that tells us this is an advert is the logo at the top right-hand corner. The slogan above " Push yourself further education" tells us that this is a serious advert that is trying to attract people towards joining the army and pushing themselves and motivating themselves towards further education, the advert implies that there is still more to be taught and there are many more things to learn.

INSTITUTION :

The institution behind this advert is the army and they are trying to attract more people to join up and take part, their aims are to have more jobs taken up.

AUDIENCE :

This advert is aimed at young adults from around the age of 18-30 this is because to be in the army you need to be fast and have good moving tactics, something like this advert would be aimed at mostly boys as they are most likely going to join the army. This advert wouldn't be aimed at a certain rice of income towards people because the job needs skill and commitment.

REPRESENTATION :

The representation on this advert is mostly white and male - which could mean that this is aimed at a specific type of audience. This is quite surprising as the army contains other types races and cultures. The fact that the pictures contain only male cadets/soldiers isn't surprising because jobs such as the army are known to require a certain amount of strength and commitment in a person, this is mostly found in man rather than woman. Also the fact that there are no woman involved gives very little coverage of woman and how dominant they can be at times.

BBC Breakfast
1) The key information about the programme:

The channel it is broadcast on BBC ONE

The days of broadcast are everyday of the week and the time of broadcast is from 6:00 - 9:15 in the morning.

The presenters are varied from Bill Turnbull, Louise Minchin to Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty

Average viewing figures are 6.838m people as its daily reach and its average weekly reach for 2012 was 12.343 million.

Awards the show has won are  TRIC award In March 2006 for best daytime television programme for the third year in a row.

The logo/brand identity of the programme is

A video clip from YouTube of the show

2) The institution behind the programme – this is usually the TV channel it is broadcast on. Find out:

The show Breakfast Times was originally launched on the 17 January 1983 however on 2 October 1989 the show was renamed to Breakfast News, after this on 2 october 2000 BBC NEWS & BBC NEWS 24 merged together to create the show and its first official launch.

The BBC run the channel however the BBC  was founded by John Reith

The channel is famous for its News broadcasts and more practical series of shows.

The channel logo
A YouTube trailer advertising a show on the channel

Other information i found about the channel was that it was founded on 18 October 1922

3) The audience for the channel is 21.9%
however the show is mostly targeted at a higher class because of how the program is layered out and how it is presented, on the program they don't just tell you the news they discuss it by bringing people in and hearing about their views, because its higher class audience the education would be high as well, as people would have to understand the point of views and what is being talked about. The show is mostly watched by adults from ages 35+ and these are mostly people who have to go work early. In my view i don't think that its aimed at one specific gender i believe that its for both male and female.

4) The running order for three separate editions of the programme. Watch at least 20 minutes of the programme on THREE separate days and write down the following:

On Monday the three stories that interested me the most were;

A British ebola patient William Pooley's lowest point "I thought of my parents"
The first British person to contract Ebola during the outbreak in West Africa has been discharged from
hospital after making a full recovery.

Ex-chief constable Mike Hedges 'unaware of Rotherham child sex abuse'
A former police chief has said he was completely unaware of the systematic sexual exploitation of children in Rotherham during his time in charge.

Scott Rogers murder: TV host in sex abuse claims
A US TV host who is thought to have been murdered by his ex-lover was a "monster" who sexually abused boys, it has been claimed.

On Tuesday the stories that interested me the most where;

Ashya King's mother 'cried and prayed'
Ashya's parents were jailed for taking him Spain to get treatment for him with fewer side effects rather
than here in England.

First three years of primary; 'free school meals'
For children of ages 5-7 all school meals are free, for all families no matter of families income.

17 year old boy was told he wouldn't survive?
17 year old Ryan Smith was told he wouldn't survive after being knocked of his bike on his way to work. He was in a coma and had severe brain damage which led to a 9 month stay in the hospital.

On Wednesday the storied i found most interesting where;

Ashya reunited with parents
The King couple were delighted to be let put and finally see their son which was placed 330 miles away from them, it was their 4th day without seeing him and they were excited to finally be released.

Apple hacked, and pictures published.
Apple was hacked and pictures of famous actors, such as Jennifer Lawrence were published.

The storied are placed in the broadcasted order.
I believe the editor chose those stories and placed them in these orders because the news vary from happy news to shocking news and then to worldwide news. These stories were broadcasted because they are important and they are touching.

10 Question-(answers)

1) What were the five stories your group chose to broadcast?
Greenford news story: Sports day cancelled.
International news story: Palestinian teenage body found in Jerusalem
London news story: UK regulator investigating whether Facebook broke data protection laws.
Sports news story: In the world cup Belgium beat USA after extra time to set up quarter final clash with Argentina.
Funny news story: Woman gives birth to her child in Birmingham, outside Primark.

2) For each story above, explain WHY you chose that particular story and not something else. Why would it interest a Greenford audience?
Greenford news story: We chose this story because everyone is talking about it in school and yr 9's are upset because their last sports day is in school.
international news story: We chose this story because the boy was kidnapped before his death.
London news story: We chose this story because Facebook is a worldwide social website and everyone is now wondering if its safe.
Sports news story: We chose this story because the world cup is now the recent sporting event and everyone especially team supporters of USA wonder if the win of Argentina was fair.
Funny news story: We chose this story because it was a funny coincidence and it was quite fascinating to know.

3) What order did you broadcast the stories in? Why did you place the stories in that order?
We did the Greenford news first because that is the school we are at. We did our international new second because it was quite sad how there was a young boy dead. The third story we broadcasted was the Facebook investigation and we chose this as our third broadcast because Facebook is used by nearly everyone therefore people our now doubting if its safe to go on the website. As fourth we did the football news because we believe that as the world cup at the moment has so many viewers from all around the world it would'v matter to them (especially USA fans) to know if the game was fair. We placed the funny news story at last place because we decided to finish of with a smile as all the news mentioned previously were bad news therefore finishing with happy and funny news was a good end.

4) How did you make sure the script was the right length?
we made sure we had a limited amount of words for each subject.
5) How did you make sure each story was clear and easy to understand?
we made sure by spelling out the words correctly and making sure the script was right and the spellings were correct.6) How did you make sure the broadcast was professional?
We made sure by telling our presenter to clear his voice look at the camera and read the words correctly.7) What was your specific role in the group?
In the group my role was the script writer so i had to write up the scrip and make sure everything on it was correct so our presenter wouldn't mess up.8) Rate your group’s ability to work collaboratively out of 5 (1=poor, 5=excellent)
In my opinion our group worked at a 3/4 because we did mess about abit however at the end we finished first and we had plenty of time to finish off other tasks.9) How could your group have worked more effectively as a team?
We could have not messed around and gave in 100% effort however even though we messed about we did pretty well so am happy.10) Finally, what would you have done differently if you were given the opportunity to do this again?
To be honest i would not change anything i believed we worked well and one of our improvements would of been to focus more.

Textual Analysis

Chris Brown ft Keri Hilson- One Night Stand.

  • The genre of this would be a love music video, the setting and atmosphere however gives it tension which make it mysterious
  • This music video would be targeted at a younger audience such as 13+, this is because the video contains two very famous singers and the video itself is interesting. In my opinion I believe this would mostly appeal to female viewers because they seem into be more attracted towards love music videos. This video would also appeal to an older audience aswell such as twenty year old people of any ethnicity.
  • This music video could be viewed on many devices however the most popular website would be you-tube and you-tube can be accessed of any device with internet. With the younger target audience this music video would be more likely to be accessed with a phone or tablet.

Mama

  • The genre of this clip would be horror movie because of the scary music and tension that builds up as we carry on watching.
  • This movie would be targeted at an audience of 15+ this is because the movie contains some disturbing scenes. The movie is not directed at one clear gender, the movie attracts both male and female of all the ethnicity's. The fact that it is a horror movie itself says that it would appeal to horror movie fans and people who enjoy the tension. Older adults would also watch this because they might watch it with their families.
  • This movie could be seen in a DVD in the cinema or even you tube, this websites could be accessed on TV or on line.

TV advert ft.Antonio Banderas.

  • The genre of this TV advert would be television advert. The sub-genre would be gum advertising .
  • The target audience for this gum advertisement would be large because there are many people who eat gum, therefore this advert would be directed to people of all ages (who can chew, or take gum). The fact that the food is made into little cartoon characters that talk, means that the younger audience would also be interested in buying the gum. The gum ' extra ' is also a very popular gum so this means that even more customers would want to buy a new product.
